What is it?
Methaqualone is a substance that produces central nervous system (CNS) depression. It has been referred to as a "downer," sediative, hypnotic, minor tranquilizer, anxiolytic, and antianxiety medication. In the United States, the marketing of methaqualone pharmaceutical products stopped in 1984.
What are its long-term effects?
Excessive use leads to tolerance, dependence and withdrawal symptoms similar to those of barbiturates.
What is its federal classification?
Methaqualone is a Schedule I drug.
